Build your skills while drawing directly from art in the galleries. We’ll focus on understanding light, value, and proportions while making compositional studies from individual artworks in the collection. Great for sketchbook skill building!

Ceramics: Coil Method

Thursdays: January 15, 22, 29, February 5, 12; 6–8 pm

Teaching Artist: Harrison Cook

Explore the ancient and versatile method of coil building to create a variety of functional and decorative objects, using both exposed and unexposed coiling techniques. We will learn to roll and attach uniform coils, refine forms, and add surface texture with sgraffito and burnishing techniques. Visits to see antiquities in the galleries will inspire and guide the artwork we create in the studio.

Drawing: Rendering the Real 

Fridays: January 16, 23, 30, February 6, 13; 10 am–noon

Teaching Artist: Darrell Riche

This class will build upon basic drawing skills and teach more advanced rendering techniques through in-depth studies of concepts like perspective, composition, and shading. Students will refine their understanding of value, form, and space through direct observation of still-life arrangements and detailed feedback in class critiques. Paintings in the European collection will guide us as we learn to draw realistic objects and spaces using graphite and charcoal.

Acrylic Painting: Iconic Portraiture

Saturdays: January 17, 24, 31, February 7, 14, 21; 1–3 pm 

Teaching Artist: Matthew Jones

Immortalize someone special in your life by creating an iconic portrait using acrylic and gold leaf techniques. Drawing inspiration from Medieval and Renaissance art in the galleries, we will examine how elements such as the use of color, the subject’s posture, and what the subject wears and holds convey meaning. Students will create a finished portrait full of symbolism and flair!

Beading: Geometric Designs 

Thursdays: February 19, 26, March 5, 12, 19; 6–8 pm

Teaching Artist: Valery Killscrow Copeland

Learn to craft beautiful, beaded jewelry, such as keychains, bracelets, and barrettes, using a weaving loom! Students will start by creating a geometric pattern, inspired by beaded objects in the galleries, to make traditional and unique designs. A knowledgeable instructor will guide students through the process, from initial plan to finishing techniques, focusing on color and rhythm.
